SATURDAY 14th FEBRUARY 2015                    LOUGH BOORA DISCOVERY PARK

LEADER: MARK MCCORRY

Bird Watching
Lough Boora Discovery Park is a cutaway bog of 2000 hectares, which has been developed by Bord na Mona for tourism and agricultural purposes. It consists of a a network of looped walkways and cycle routes, and is an important haven for flora, fauna, insects, and wildlife. In addition, it hosts a permanent collection of large-scale, land and environmental sculptures. The Park has been greatly improved recently with the establishment of a new visitor centre and other facilities, which greatly enhance the range of amenities available.

Our leader, Mark McCorry, began the outing by outlining the geography and history of the bog. Then, having viewed the visitor centre, we commenced our tour of the lakes and wetlands, which attract a wide range of wintering waders, ducks, geese and swans. During the day Mark generously shared his wide knowledge of the avifauna with us, while Fiona MacGowan supplemented his leadership with information on the frolicking hares (Lepus timidus hibernicus), and other topics of natural history.

As we ambled along the numerous trails on this mild, calm day, with the Slieve Bloom Mountains providing a scenic backdrop, we saw a large variety of native and migrant birds, including good views of a pair of Grey Partridges. Lough Boora is home to the last remaining population in Ireland of the red-listed, Grey Partridge, where they are part of a successful conservation programme on a site managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
